Well, here we go. I asked what you guys wanted done as a giveaway to celebrate publication of The Boys Upstairs, and now we’re going to do it.
First, go buy ten copies of the book. (Actually, that has nothing to do with the giveaway. I just want to make some sales.)
Second, all you really have to do to enter is to leave a comment. I’ll figure out a way to choose at random from the comments received before midnight.
But I want it to be a special comment.
That’s right. I want a haiku. It doesn’t have to be a good haiku, nor even an original one. Just that whole three lines, five syllables-seven syllables-five syllables thing, and if you’re looking for a subject, check out the list of categories in the sidebar on the right. A haiku on anything I blog about (angels, writing, music, parenting, food, etc) gets you entered to win…something.
The winner gets to pick the giveaway item because my readership here is diverse. Here are your choices:
- A signed copy of Seven Archangels: Annihilation
- A knitted wavy gravy hat or a waterfall scarf
- A ten-page critique of your writing (and this could be anything up to about 3000 words. Short story, novel chapter, five query letters — it’s up to you.)
Thirdly, spread the word. Have fun. That’s what this is about, really.
If at some point in this process you do decide to go over to the publisher and buy The Boys Upstairs, here’s a super-secret discount code that will get you 25% off the cover price (which is $4.50 Canadian; it drops to $3.38 with the code). Put HC2010D at checkout in the discount code box before going to Paypal. (That’s good until December 10th.)
Cool? Cool. Let’s do this thing.

Edited: we’re going to close now to further entries, but if you still want to write a haiku, go for it! These have been so much fun, and I’m so pleased to read them all. 🙂 You guys are terrific and funny!

I don’t need to win anything. I just want to share how much this novella rocks out loud. And it does. I owe you a review. It’s coming, I swear! But To anyone who is interested in the book, buy it, read it, laugh and cry, nod your head with that knowing look (you know people in this book, I promise). If you enjoy the blog, you’ll love the book. Cross my heart and hope to fry!

And of course, I absolutely melt every time he does this trick (imitating Mai chasing soot sprites). It makes a mother-geek proud.
